- Philippe van den Abeele is Chief Investment Officer of Consortium Maritime Trading Ltd (CMT), a London-based firm that trades maritime freight derivatives on a fully cleared basis. He has spent more than four decades in freight and freight-related commodity derivatives. He began as a dry cargo shipbroker at Galbraiths in 1980, before moving into futures broking in 1984, where he helped build the early freight derivatives market. As Managing Director of Clarkson Securities (1989–2006) and an Executive Board Director of H Clarkson (2001–06), he was instrumental in developing financial hedging tools for the global shipping community. Since 2006 he has worked as a principal investor in freight and commodity derivatives, first as co-founder of Castalia Fund Management and since 2014 at CMT. He chaired the Freight Market Users’ Group (2011–14) and has been a Baltic Exchange member since 1981.
